How to start in Safe mode

Many malware programmes are coded to run each time the computer is started or when you open a particular programme, like your Internet browser. This causes problems as programmes cannot be uninstalled while they are running.
It can therefore be useful, sometimes necessary to work in Safe Mode, This is a windows feature that allows only the basic Windows files and drivers to run on start up.

To start your PC in safe mode, tap or hold down the F8 button on your keyboard immediately after switching on your PC, instead of Windows opening normally, you will see an Advanced Options menu

Use the up and down arrow keys to select Safe mode and hit the Enter button. If you want to connect to a network, including the internet while in Safe mode, select Safe mode with networking.

Windows 98 will show a slightly different menu.

Select Safe mode using the number 3 on the keyboard and hit Enter

When windows opens the colours, sizes etc are likely to be different as the drivers for graphics cards were not loaded. It will also say Safe Mode in all four corners of the screen.

Once your work is complete, simply restart your computer in the normal way.
